Fan of the Week – Clive Rene

Tell us a little bit about yourself ?

I am Clive Rene and 39 yrs old. I work in the sales for the medical field. I have 4 kids and one horse who is retired.

Since when you got interested into horse racing and why ?

I have always been interested in racing since my father was and transmitted his virus to myself and my brother. Hence I would say I’ve been going to racing for 39 years. I always loved horses though its been only 3 years ago when I finally got the chance to be really closed to horses and start some horse riding for leisure. And during these three years, I got the chance to be very close to To The Line, Super Storm and of course Legal Maxim.

What has been the biggest influence on you becoming a Cedric Segeon fan ?

I always saw Cedric as an intelligent jockey, one of the most intelligent who has been riding here. Also he is a guy who looks for safety first. One quality I appreciate is that he will take risks but will never put himself or any of his colleagues in danger. He has great tactical qualities.

Your most memorable race at the Champ de Mars ?

My most memorable race is the win of Dambuster in the Gold Cup in 1986. I remember he had the 10th draw and ridden by Anil Doyal. Anil used the full length of the straight to get to the front and managed to stay in front until the winning post.

Your favorite horse ever? Tell us a bit about the horse

By default Super Storm and Legal Maxim are my favourites. Super Storm because he has been a great horse in SA but very unlucky here. But I have been lucky enough to be closed to him and learn so much about horse riding with him. He showed me how intelligent a horse can be.

Legal Maxim is my horse. Unlucky also to stop his career but since he is in Mauritius he has had a special place in my heart. Thanks to Nora, Mr Patrick Merven and Mr Le Breton, he is now under my custody and giving us so much joy and happiness.

Which cedric segeon ride you liked the most in mauritius ?

There are two races which I will never forget for Cedric. The first one is his win on Baraloche on 1500m. it was a pillar to post race. We were at the final turn and Cedric did exactly what was to be done to beat Kenny Tee.

Then my best souvenir is Liquid Motion win in the Princess Margaret in 2013. Cedric just rode him as I predicted and stayed on the fence intelligently to win. I had some tears that day as the race was run and won exactly as I dreamt of.

Any horse you will follow closely on his next outing ?

Being emotional, I would follow and expect much from Owls Do Cry this year. Two other horses who I think will go even further this year are Lions Print and Might Lion.

A word for cedric Segeon and fellow fans ?

To the Fans: Stay Sincere

To Cedric: stay as you are. Simple, always accessible and down to earth
